Solar Exit

How to Get Out of a Solar Lease

Solar leases and power purchase agreements work differently from loans. Here's what to check and which exit paths usually exist.

Lease, PPA or loan?

With a lease or power purchase agreement (PPA), the solar company usually still owns the panels. With a loan, you own them and owe the lender. The first page of your agreement normally says which one you have.

Common exit paths

Most leases describe a buyout option, a transfer to a new homeowner, or early termination terms. Read those sections closely and ask the company for a written payoff or buyout quote.

When something doesn't add up

If the lease was signed without your consent, or the terms differ from what you were told, keep notes and copies and get a review before you sign anything new. Solar Exit can look at it with you for free.
